St Croix Review

Hello and welcome back, we had a good trip to St Croix the second week of May. The flight was without incident and the luggage even arrived with us.  After a short taxi ride to Christiansted we checked in with our dive operator DIVE EXPERIENCE and got our diving plans confirmed then took a short walk to  dockside and caught the water taxi to the Hotel on the Cay.  The hotel is a total package with their own restaurant, bar and beach. The water taxi is free for guests of the hotel and runs every ten minutes. There are plenty of places to eat and drink within easy walking distance of the taxi landing as is the dive boat dock.  Dive Experience does a good job and runs a pretty tight  boat.                                                                                                                                                                                            When the plane is on final approach it will pass over Fredericksted and you will be able to see the cruise boat pier, which is a very nice dive site. The boats come in on Saturday so there is no diving but every other day is good. You will find it more convenient to dive it with an operator as they can park on the pier, if you drive yourself it is necessary to unload your gear and then find a place to park outside the pier enclosure. The pier is 1526feet long and large enough to accomodate two cruise boats at one time. The shallow end is about 12 foot deep and a drop of about ten feet to the water, the deep end at the end of the pier is about 40 foot deep with a drop of about 20 feet. Exit is either by ladders along the pier or swimming into the beach. There are restrooms available at the entrance to the pier. Fredericksted is approximately 25-30 minutes from Christiansted. We rented a car from OLYMPIC CAR RENTALS and easily found our way to Fredericksted Pier. The Olympic people will take you to the airport for free when you return your car on the day of your departure, saving the cost and hassle of a taxi.

More from Belize

These are some videos shot in Belize, we thought you might enjoy. The subjects are pretty co~operative but still have their temperaments. The turtle was extremely passive and the diver in the shark hood deserved to be shown. The gracefulness and natural beauty of the creatures of the sea never cease to amaze and delight, the bonus of being a scuba diver. Any one visiting and viewing these scenes really need to look into diving- it is a whole new world just below the surface. By the way, the guy in the shark hood is Darren and he would appreciate you viewing his website  www.kgimagery.com to see more Belize photos and other pictures from their travels. Thanks for visiting come back soon.

Photos from Dominica

These are some photos taken on a trip to Dominica, a beautiful and some what undeveloped island although it is an eco island with hiking tours and other land based activities and of course the prerequisite scuba diving. We stayed at the Castle Comfort Dive Lodge and dove with Dive Dominica which is on site. Night diving there is exceptional with basket coral unfurled and electric rays scattered about in the sand. As seen in video we were fortunate enough to catch the Black Pearl of  Pirates of the Caribbean  fame on location when the third movie was being shot. The people are friendly and speak English. You get quite a tour on the ride from the airport to the lodge. We had a package with the lodge providing two meals a day usually with two choices of entree, very good food and sometimes interesting. After making your flight reservations keep aclose watch on them as the small commuter lines sometimes just go out of business and don't bother to notify anyone. The diving is well worth the trip.

Sealions in the Galapagos Islands

Hello, and welcome!! Just a quick revisit to look at a video of Dianne playing with a pair of sea lions. This was our check out dive and we had been told there were sea lions around the area but we did not expect to encounter them right away. This was our first dive with new wet suits and other safety gear we had been issued by Aggressor that we were not used to. As we swam with the critters we did not realize we were drifting closer into shore realized what the problem was so we headed back out toward the boat and they went on their way. The new gear and extra activity playing with the sea lions left us lower on air than we woud have liked but that is what a checkout dive is all about and apparently closer to their nest- needless to say we found the sea lions becoming more aggressive and even threatening. I finally realized what the problem was and we moved back out toward the boat and they went on their way. We ended up a little shorter on gas between the extra exertion and new gear than we are used to but that is what a checkout dive is for.

Belize Movie

Hello again! Hope this finds you and yours well. Just put together a few short videos from the Belize trip for you to take a look at. I spoke of tips and suggestions the other day- when I finely decided to pack for the  Belize trip it was two days before we  were to leave. While inventorying dive gear it became evident that my  wife's mask was missing, no biggy, just pick up  a spare. The wife has vision so bad at five feet she would not know me from a tree- yep prescription mask. This occurred back in October actually when a member of our group grabbed  a back pack by accident with our gear in it. When they left she gave it to another diver because of weight restrictions, all unbeknownst to us.we had the right number of mask boxes just not the right mask. Frantic internet order to Snorkel Mart.com Thursday night got us a optcally correct mask by noon Friday- AMAZING! They even called Friday morning to confirm delivery. So as I started to say, check your gear when you get home and check again a couple of weeks before you leave. A regulator tune up can take up to a month depending on your shop. Blow up your BC and check for leaks or gear you can't find-we still had reef hooks in our pockets. Fin straps, mask staps and camera parts need to be checked. Start early and be prepared. Prior planning prevents pi-- poor performance. See you next time.(the other diver called and told us he had her gear after an emergency e-mail campaign., we had his)
